This was my second time getting the opportunity getting to cover Devour the Day. They were the on the opening bill for Pop Evil the last time I covered them, which is not a coincidence, since the section of bassist Joey “Chicago” Walser and Blake Allison also play for Pop Evil. I did not realize how long Devour the Day had been around. They have been around for over a decade with their first release coming out in 2013.
Devour the Day were off my radar until about five to six years ago. But now that I have seen them twice, I see that they are a force to be reckoned with. One thing that I have noticed at the shows is that they have a very strong following. They fans are up on their feet singing along word for word during every song. I love watching the crowd when I’m done shooting and seeing the pure joy of watching their favorite song belt out song after song.
Blake Allison is a great vocalist with a strong voice. His energy is infectious, he is dancing and jumping around the whole show. His interactions with the crowd is part of what makes him great. There are singers and then there are entertainers. Blake is both. He definitely knows how to work the crowd. Devour the Day songs are loud, aggressive, and melodic. They have a lot of anthems in their repertoire. One of my favorites is Good Man, which is the first song of their I ever played on Spotify. I also loved hearing Nobody Owes Me, Killing Time, and Empty played live. No ballads here, just straight of the canon rock and roll.
I highly recommend you checking these guys out on tour if you get the chance. They are a great live band that gives you 110% on the stage. If you can’t catch them live, I suggest you check out any of their releases. They have a lot of great tunes, the latest release is Fragments of Us that was released earlier this year.
